A new study published in the journal Frontiers in Pharmacology has shown that an Amanita muscaria mushroom extract developed by Psyched Wellness (CSE: PSYC) (OTC Pink: DCNPF) could be capable of positively modulating brain health.

The study was published on April 12 and Psyched announced the results on Tuesday. They showed that the company’s extract activates human microglia, the primary immune cells in the central nervous system (CNS).

The research was conducted by the National Research Council of Canada, and for the first time the group has demonstrated that Amanita muscaria can activate human microglia cells grown in lab cultures. This activation triggers the production of immune mediators that could mobilize other immune cells within the brain and induce positive changes in neuronal function.

“The potential priming effect results in a more efficient response of these cells to help maintain brain maintenance and thus sustainment of normal brain functions,” said Brian Tancowny, a Scientific Advisor for Psyched Wellness.

The peer-reviewed study highlights the significant role of Amanita muscaria in modulating the immune response in the brain through the activation of those microglia cells. Microglia cells play a vital role in maintaining brain health by clearing the CNS of infectious agents, plaques, damaged neurons and excess synapses which can disrupt normal brain functioning.

It is particularly relevant because neuroinflammation and immune-induced changes in the brain have been implicated in various conditions, including migraines, depression and altered sleep patterns. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms underlying microglia activation can provide valuable insights into the development of these conditions and potential therapeutic interventions.

“This data suggests that the AME-1 extract may prime microglial cells toward a protective innate immune response facilitated by TLR3,” reads the study. TLR3 is a type of protein that plays a crucial role in the immune system.

The group also demonstrated that Amanita muscaria extracts contain crucial metabolites like trehalose, a sugar found in some fungi and yeasts.

This discovery was made possible through the use of metabolite screening technology. Trehalose, which is used in the production of food, beauty products and some pharmaceuticals, could play a vital role in modulating microglial inflammatory responses.

“The National Research Council of Canada based its research on our company’s proprietary Amanita muscaria extract, AME-1, and proved additional benefits of our effective supplement. This is another key finding of function and furthers our understanding of the effects of AME-1” said David Shisel, Chief Operations Officer of Psyched Wellness.

Psyched also announced on Wednesday that the mushroom extract was now available on the website of the American department store Sears. The extract is also currently available on Amazon and at Good Earth Markets locations.

The company’s shares dropped by 14.29 per cent on Wednesday to $0.06 on the Canadian Securities Exchange.
