Alabama Psychedelic Reform is Lagging

Alabama is a historically conservative state with little participation in drug reform efforts. As a result, most psychedelics remain illegal. People can legally access ketamine therapy in the state, as is the case with the entire US. Amanita Muscaria is also legal to cultivate, purchase, and use. Otherwise, all psychedelic compounds are illegal outside of FDA-approved clinical trials. Citizens looking to access psychedelic-assisted therapy must travel out of the country, or to Oregon to receive treatment.

State Reform Efforts

There have been no reform efforts for psychedelics in Alabama. The state has also made no effort to fund research into psychedelic compounds, however, the same cannot be said for the state’s educational institutions. University of Alabama at Birmingham has been participating in conducting research on the benefits of psychedelics in the treatment of several indications.

When Will Psychedelics Be Legalized in Alabama?

There is no indication of state legalization efforts any time soon. However, MDMA may become legal for the treatment of PTSD in 2024. The FDA approval of this drug would make it available to the entire US. There is no indication that Alabama will be introducing legislation that would change the legal status of any other psychedelics on a state level.
